- Is the projected Senior Center cost actually off? In recent weeks, the debate over a new Senior Center has flared up hot and heavy. Some are urging the city to buy Trinity Methodist Church, since leasing the current center at the Daniel Arthur Building for seven years would cost $460,180 and the city would still end up not actually owning a center. A memo from City Manager James R. O’Connor estimated the total cost of buying and renovating Trinity Methodist Church at between $1.5 to $1.75 million. But it turns out that’s not actually the case. While that is the price, it’s not the true cost. Why?

There are a couple of important upcoming meetings regarding regarding a road expansion planned for the west end of Oak Ridge.
On Monday, July 6, at 6:30 p.m., the Oak Ridge City Council will hold a work session on recent developments with State Route 95 project. As with all meetings of the Oak Ridge City Council, this work session will be open to the public. The session will be held in the Social Room of the Oak Ridge Civic Center at 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Oak Ridge City Council delayed making a definite decision on the city’s Senior Center earlier this week.
In a close 4-to-3 vote, Council voted to postpone a decision to approve continuing a lease for the seniors at their current location at the Daniel Arthur Building on Emory Valley Road.
Voting to wait until August to make a final decision were Council members David Mosby, Anne Garcia Garland, Charlie Hensley and Ellen Smith. Voting against the delay were Mayor Tom Beehan, Vice Mayor Jane Miller and Council member Tom Hayes.

As another high school football season nears, it brings with it the usual air of uncertainty.
Take the 2009 Tennessee high school football postseason, for example.

The esteemed Oak Ridge High School will begin the 2008-2009 school year with a new man leading the way, as has been previously reported. But, who is this man, and what are his goals?
Dr. Jody Goins was promoted to principal after serving as vice-principal since 2007. He will take over for Dr. Chuck Carringer, who is leaving to take a position at an area church. Goins has been working with ORHS since 2004, where he began as a World Geography teacher and was quickly moved into administration.

Oak Ridge could soon be home to a free medical clinic. A group calling itself Clinics of Hope, USA, is hoping to open the free medical clinic in Oak Ridge by late Fall of this year.
The course to pulling this off began with a bus trip and rally on the steps of the Capitol in Washington, D.C. on April 16, 2008, when a small group of Knoxville area residents wanted to bring national attention to the urgent need of the millions of Americans who do not have regular access to medical care. After returning to Knoxville, the group decided to not stop at only raising awareness, but to take direct action.

Oak Ridge High School has dipped into the collegiate ranks for its new boys’ basketball coach.
Barry Wortman, associate head coach of basketball at Morehead State (Ky.) University, was named head coach of the Wildcats Wednesday.
